Zap that zit: what’s the most effective acne treatment?

Zap that zit: what’s the most effective acne treatment?

The most effective acne treatment:  Acne is not just the preserve of the hormonal teenager – adult acne has been described as an epidemic with growing numbers of men and women suffering from acne in their 20s, 30s, 40s and beyond. Women are more prone to developing adult acne as a result of hormonal imbalances and recent statistics point to a staggering 50% of women suffering from acne at some point in their adult years.

If you suffer from acne, then the chances are you’ve tried every home-use treatment going. From over-the-counter face washes and creams to prescription medications from the GP, most acne sufferers will give anything a go in an effort to rid their skin of the painful and unsightly problem.

So, what’s the best treatment for acne? That’s a question we’re asked a lot here at the Specialist Skin Clinic in Cardiff, and it’s a difficult one to answer, as the best acne treatment for you will depend on a number of factors and patients may require a number of different complementary acne treatments, which is why we tend to describe it as an acne treatment programme.

The best way to determine the acne treatment programme most appropriate for you is to come in for a consultation about acne treatment in Cardiff with one of our qualified skin experts.

What causes acne?

Beneath the surface of your skin are glands called sebaceous glands. These glands produce a substance called sebum, which is essential for keeping your skin and hair moisturised. Acne itself is usually triggered by hormones, which cause the sebaceous glands to go into overdrive, producing far too much sebum which then blocks the pores, causing the whiteheads, blackheads and cysts that are the outward sign of acne.

There are two main types of acne that affect adults and your initial assessment at the Specialist Skin Clinic will aim to identify which you are most likely suffering from. If you have persistent acne then you will have suffered from outbreaks throughout your teen years which will have never really gone away. Persistent acne typically occurs in the oily T-zone of the face, which is across the forehead and down the nose and chin.

Late-onset acne occurs during your mid to late twenties and spots will commonly appear on the cheeks, jawline, chin and neck, usually at certain times of the month in women and it may be the case that you develop just a few spots at a time, but they tend to be hard, red, painful and inflamed and can take a while to resolve.
