Stretch marks Wedding Planner: We see many women at the Specialist Skin Clinic that have slimmed down to fit into the dress of their dreams only to find new blemishes have appeared, as a drastic change in body size can be a factor in the development of stretch marks. Stretch marks are formed in the lower layers of the dermis and are, in effect, a scar, so they can be challenging to treat. Over-the-counter lotions or creams won’t make a difference, but we have a number of highly effective aesthetic procedures that can greatly improve their appearance.

  • What causes stretch marks?

Stretch marks occur when our skin rapidly stretches, either due to rapid growth or sudden weight gain. Hormonal changes are also a factor as they weaken the collagen and elastin fibres which provide the skin’s structure and ability to stretch. The middle layer of the dermis tears and the tissues in the deeper skin layers show through.

Initially, the inflamed blood vessels are revealed which give stretch marks their red or purple colour, but when the blood vessels contract, the paler fat tissue is visible. This is when the stretch marks become a silver or white colour, distinct to the surrounding skin.

At this point, the stretch mark has become more of a scar and is therefore more challenging to treat. Therefore, whether you are a bride or not, the best time to seek treatment for stretch marks is as soon as they appear.

Even if it’s just a few days or weeks prior to your wedding, make an appointment at the Specialist Skin Clinic and we can discuss your treatment options.

  • What are the best treatments for stretch marks?

Cosmecuetical products containing vitamins A or C can help boost collagen production to repair damage to the dermis. Dr Maria Gonzalez can also prescribe retinoid gels or creams that stimulates collagen and elastin cell turnover.

For both new and mature stretch marks, laser treatments can be an effective option. For red or purple stretch marks, vascular lasers produce laser energy that is absorbed by the pigment in the blood vessels, causing them to contract and the redness disappear.

For older, pale stretch marks, fractional or faxel lasers can be used. Small columns of laser energy are drilled into the target area, stimulating the body’s healing process.

Whether you are worried about baring your arms or cleavage in your wedding dress or wearing a bikini on your honeymoon, now is the time to seek treatment for stretch marks.
