Hirsutism Wedding Planner: Hirsutism is the medical term for an excess of dark, thick and coarse hair that typically follows a male pattern of growth. Commonly, they experience this hair growth on their upper lips and chin and neck in a beard-like pattern. The chest, stomach, lower back and thighs can also be similarly affected. This problem is more common than you think and particularly affects women of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern descent.

  • What causes hirsutism?

Although hirsutism is not hereditary, it often runs in families and it is caused by our hormones, whether that an increased production of the hormone androgen or an increased sensitivity to that hormone.

Although it is thought of as the male sex hormone, women do produce androgens and, at times of hormonal imbalance, such as the puberty or the menopause, we can produce too much.

Pre-menopause, the usual cause of hirsutism is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, commonly known as PCOS. It’s thought that up to one in every five women in the UK suffer from PCOS, a condition that affects how the ovaries work.

It manifests itself as irregular periods, difficulty conceiving, weight gain, oily skin and acne breakouts and, often, excessive face and body hair.

  • What are the treatment options for hirsutism?

Our medical director Dr Maria Gonzalez is a locum consultant dermatologist of many years’ experience.

The first step will be to determine if there is a hormonal cause as there are a number of prescription medications, such as oral contraceptives, which can block the action of the androgen hormones. This will hopefully slow regrowth or stop it returning completely.

In terms of dealing with the outward manifestation of the problem, we offer laser hair removal which safely and effectively destroys the hair follicle, with none of the irritation associated with waxing and shaving.

For brides with darker skin tones, it is essential you choose a skincare specialist to ensure no darkening or lightening of the skin or scarring.
