Could the makers of Botox come up with a cure for acne?

  • Could the makers of Botox come up with a cure for acne?

If you’re suffering from acne, it’s understandable you’re likely desperate for a miracle cure.

Depending upon its severity, acne can cause significant psychological distress. While it’s most associated with adolescents, it can strike at any age and it doesn’t just look unsightly, it can also be really uncomfortable too.

While there are many treatment options available, there’s no one absolute cure that works for everyone. However, Allergan, the makers of Botox, may have discovered a solution. Current trials of Allergan’s new acne drug are proving to be extremely successful. So, what is this new drug that’s providing hope to millions of acne sufferers?

  • Sarecycline – A cure for moderate to severe acne?

Allergan’s new drug, Sarecycline, is currently in its late stage trials. The tetracycline derived oral antibiotic has so far shown significant results in Phase 3 trials.

It’s designed to be taken just once a day and patients in the trials have reportedly experienced much fewer lesions since taking it. These results have led Allergan to decide to apply the new drug to the FDA. This will be done later on in the year.

Interestingly, the drug is also being used to treat another embarrassing skin condition – Rosacea. If it is approved and the drug is found to significantly clear up blemish-prone skin, it won’t be long before we start seeing it on the shelves.

  • Are there any current effective acne treatments available?

While the Sarecycline drug is certainly an exciting development, it doesn’t do much for those currently suffering with the condition. However, the good news is there are lots of different therapies and treatments available right now which can help.Cure For Acne

It’s important to see a dermatologist prior to trying any potential treatments. They will be able to diagnose the severity of the problem and suggest the best type of treatment to clear it up.

Just some of the treatment options available include:

All of the above have shown remarkable results at clearing up moderate to severe acne. You may even find a combination of treatments works best. Our medical director, Dr Maria Gonzalez, is a dermatologist with many years’ experience in treating serious acne conditions. She will be able to customise the acne treatment to fit your individual requirements.

Some patients will require much stronger treatments than others, which is why it is so important to have the condition assessed prior to treatment. There is no ‘one size fits all’ acne treatment and most over-the-counter products don’t tend to work for the more severe types.

Overall, acne can be a devastating condition to live with and it does cause a lot of embarrassment. However, it is treatable and new drug developments such as these provide further hope for an effective, easy over-the counter cure. For now, you can book a consultation with Dr Gonzalez to discover what the best form of treatment would be.
